What do backorder statuses mean?

Every backorder in your account carries one status. It changes as the name moves through its lifecycle, and your alerts fire on each change.

ScheduledYour backorder is placed and waits for the name to reach pending delete
Pending dropThe name is in pending delete and the drop date is set
In auctionSeveral members backordered the name; a private member auction is open

LostThe name went elsewhere or another member won the auction
ReleasedThe previous owner renewed or restored the name, so the backorder closes

How does a domain backorder service work?

You pick names from the scored expired domain names list or type them in, and each becomes a backorder in Scheduled status. You can also let backorder rules place backorders for you when names meet your criteria. When the name reaches the drop, the attempt happens without any action from you, and the status moves to Won, Lost, In auction or Released.

What do you pay when you backorder a domain name?

Your plan covers the service. When a backorder succeeds you pay the domain's registration fee, the price of the name itself. When several members backorder the same name, it goes to a private auction between them and the winner pays the closing bid. There is no per-catch fee, no credits and no top-ups, and a backorder that does not succeed costs nothing beyond your plan.

What happens when several members backorder the same name?

The name goes to a private member auction open only to the members who held a backorder on it. Each bidder sees the current bid and the closing time, and the highest bid at the close wins. The winner pays the closing bid and the name moves to the winner's account. Read the bidding rules on domain auctions.

Can a backorder be guaranteed?

No. Nobody can guarantee a drop, because the previous owner can renew or restore the name until it leaves redemption, and other parties may want it too. That is why a backorder is Released when the owner renews, and why you only pay the registration fee when a name is actually yours. To understand the timing, read drop catching.

Which extensions can I backorder?

You can backorder names across many extensions. Starter covers 30 extensions, and Pro, Portfolio and Enterprise cover all supported extensions.

Can I cancel a backorder?

Yes. A backorder in Scheduled status can be cancelled at any time before the drop. It is removed from your list, and its place returns to this month's limit.

Is there a fee when a backorder fails?

No. A failed or Released backorder costs nothing beyond your plan. You pay the registration fee only when the name is registered to your account, or the closing bid when you win a member auction.
