No Epik backorder today, two chances to catch the name
Epik backorder service for expiring Epik domains and NameLiquidate drops
Epik no longer lists a backorder product. An expired Epik name gets 30 days of grace, then a seven day reverse auction on NameLiquidate that falls from $999 to $9, then redemption and pending delete before it drops around day 75. Domaining scores the name, tells you when to buy in the auction and backorders the drop if nobody does, from $49 a month with 25 backorders.

What happens when an Epik domain expires?
Epik's own life cycle guide and its expired registration recovery policy lay out the path. The holder gets a 30 day grace period to renew at the normal price, although Epik switches off the name's host records, so the website and email stop working. At 10 PM Pacific on day 30 the name is removed from the holder's account.
By day 33 it is listed on NameLiquidate for a seven day reverse auction. If nobody buys it there, it moves into the redemption grace period around day 43 for up to 30 days, then pending delete for 3 to 5 days, and only then does the registry release it. The bar below is drawn to scale.
Days 0 to 30
Grace. The holder renews at the normal price, but the site and email are already down, which is when many holders notice.
Days 33 to 40
NameLiquidate. A 168 hour reverse auction from $999 down to $9, plus the renewal fee. The holder can still redeem until it sells.
About day 43 on
Redemption for up to 30 days. Only the holder can restore it, for a redemption fee plus renewal. You cannot buy it.
Pending delete
3 to 5 days. Nobody can restore it, the release date is set, and your Domaining backorder fires at release.
Periods, prices and commission come from Epik's help center pages on the life cycle of Epik domains, its grace period and its expired registration recovery policy. Epik's general domain guide describes a longer 45 day redemption for the industry, and some country code domains run on their own cycles, so read the WHOIS status of each name instead of counting from the expiry date.
How the NameLiquidate reverse auction works
A reverse auction turns bidding upside down. Nobody bids. The price starts at $999 and drops every hour for 168 hours until it reaches $9, and the first buyer to accept the current price gets the name, paying that price plus the renewal fee. Epik keeps 9% of the sale and credits the other 91% to the former holder as store credit.
So the question is timing. Buy a strong name at $600 on day one and you may have overpaid; wait for $40 and someone else takes it at $120. The answer is a ceiling you set before the auction opens, from a value score with the reasons behind it, and a watchlist that tells you the moment an Epik name you follow is listed.

How much does it cost to backorder an Epik domain?
Epik itself sells no backorder now, so there is no Epik price to pay. On NameLiquidate you pay whatever the clock shows, between $999 and $9, plus renewal. A drop catcher charges per caught name, about $59 for a .com at DropCatch. On Domaining a plan from $49 a month includes 25 backorders, and a name you win costs only the registration fee on top.
| Option | What it costs | When it works | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buy on NameLiquidate | $999 falling to $9, plus the renewal fee | Days 33 to 40 after expiry | You have to watch the clock; the holder can still redeem |
| Old Epik backorder | No longer listed on Epik's site | Used to be first come, first served | Failed orders were refunded as store credit, not cash |
| DropCatch | About $59 per caught .com, auction if contested | At the registry drop | A fee on every catch adds up across a monthly list |
| Offer to the holder | Whatever you agree, plus escrow | Before expiry or during grace | Asking can remind the holder to renew; a domain broker keeps you anonymous |
| Domaining | From $49 a month with 25 backorders, registration fee on a win | Watchlist alert for the auction, then a backorder at the drop | Cannot reach a name the holder redeems or a buyer takes on NameLiquidate |
A fee by fee ranking of drop catchers is in the best domain backorder service comparison, and the DropCatch math for a monthly list is in the DropCatch alternatives article.
Should you buy in the auction or wait for the drop?
An Epik name gives you two shots, and the right one depends on how many other people want it.
Buy on NameLiquidate when
- The name is short, aged or keyword rich and others are watching it too
- The current price has fallen under your ceiling from the domain value estimator
- You need it this month and cannot sit through another 35 days of redemption
Backorder it with Domaining when
- The auction ended without a buyer and the name went into redemption
- You follow dozens of names a month and cannot watch every hourly price step
- You would rather let backorder rules order every match by score, length and price cap
How to catch an expired Epik domain
From the WHOIS lookup to the name sitting in your account, in four steps.
-
01
Confirm the registrar
Look up the name. If the registrar is Epik and the expiry date has passed, count where it sits: grace until day 30, the auction from day 33, redemption from about day 43.
-
02
Score it and set a ceiling
Run it through the estimator, read the reasons behind the score and write down the most you would pay on NameLiquidate.
-
03
Watch the auction
Add it to a watchlist with expiry alerts. Buy on NameLiquidate if the price drops under your ceiling before someone else takes it.
-
04
Backorder the drop
If it goes unsold into redemption, place a backorder before pendingDelete. Two members on one name settle it in a private auction.
Want a name before it even expires? Put it on a watchlist with domain expiry alerts. The full mechanics of orders, wins and member auctions are on the backorder domain names page.
Who backorders Epik domains
Epik has long been a registrar of choice for domain investors, so its expiring list holds more aged, investor-grade names than most small registrars.
Investors
Who restock with aged domain names that another investor stopped renewing, then resell them on the domain marketplace with no commission.
Agencies
Picking up local and service names for clients when an old portfolio at Epik is let go in bulk.

Questions about Epik backorders
Does Epik offer domain backorders?
Not that we can find today. Epik's current site lists registration, transfers, hosting, email and business services, but no backorder product, and its old help article on Epik backorders no longer loads. Epik once sold first come, first served backorders refunded as store credit. To catch an expired Epik name now you watch NameLiquidate and backorder the drop elsewhere.
How do I backorder a domain on Epik?
You cannot queue the order inside Epik anymore. Look up the name, confirm Epik is the registrar and read the expiry date. Put it on a watchlist, decide your ceiling for the NameLiquidate reverse auction that starts by day 33, and place a Domaining backorder for the drop in case nobody buys it there or the holder lets redemption run out.
What happens when an Epik domain expires?
Epik gives a 30 day grace period in which the holder renews at the normal price, though the DNS stops working. On day 30 the name leaves the holder's account, by day 33 it goes to a seven day reverse auction on NameLiquidate, and if it does not sell it enters redemption around day 43, then pending delete for 3 to 5 days.
What is NameLiquidate?
NameLiquidate is the reverse auction venue Epik uses for expired names. Each auction runs 168 hours, starts at $999 and drops every hour until it reaches $9. The buyer pays the current price plus the renewal fee. Epik keeps 9% of the sale and credits the rest to the former holder as store credit.
How long is the Epik grace period?
Thirty days from the expiration date for most generic domains, according to Epik's grace period and recovery policy pages. The holder renews at no extra fee during that time. Epik notes that some country code domains have their own cycles and must be renewed earlier, so read the WHOIS status of each name instead of counting days.
When does an expired Epik domain become available?
If nobody buys it on NameLiquidate and the holder never redeems it, an expired Epik .com is released somewhere around day 73 to 78. That is 30 days of grace, a few days to the auction, a seven day auction, up to 30 days of redemption from about day 43, and 3 to 5 days of pending delete.
Can I still buy an expired Epik domain before it drops?
Yes, on NameLiquidate while the reverse auction runs. The price falls from $999 toward $9 over seven days, so the decision is when to buy, not how much to bid. Wait too long on a good name and another buyer takes it at a higher step. Set your ceiling from a value score before the auction opens.
Is an Epik backorder guaranteed?
No. The holder can renew in grace or redeem during the auction and redemption, a NameLiquidate buyer can take the name first, and at the drop a faster catcher can register it before anyone else. Anyone who promises a specific expiring name is overstating what they control. On Domaining you pay nothing extra for a name you do not win.
Is Domaining affiliated with Epik?
No. Domaining is an independent platform with no tie to Epik or NameLiquidate. The periods, prices and commission on this page come from Epik's public help center, its expired registration recovery policy and its life cycle guide, which can change, so check the status of each name before you rely on a date.
